I am deeply concerned to learn that Institució de les Lletres Catalanes might lose its financial support and independence.
Two years ago Edvin Sugarev and I were invited to take part in a translation seminar, organized by the Institute. The aim of the project was to prepare and publish a book of selected poems by the two of us into Catalan. The Institute had already established a tradition of presenting modern poetry from different countries to the Catalan reading public, not necessarily favoring the power of the more popular European languages and giving a chance to smaller linguistic communities to share their achievements. The efforts of several distinguished Catalan poets like Francesc Parcerisas, Oriol Izquierdo, Josep Pedrals and others were involved in the initiative, as well as the work of four top translators.
