Carta de Christopher Whyte

Dear Sirs,
I am writing to express the strongest possible support for preserving the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes under its actual status of "Entitat Autònoma del Departament de Cultura". Cultural institutions of this nature are not merely branches of the general government administration. They constitute a sort of bridge between the administration and the most active and creative elements in society, who will as often as not adopt a critical attitude towards much that they see around them. Their independence is as valuable as the criticisms they can offer are precious and it is a function of the Institució de les Lletres to both champion and itself embody that independence. Any move likely to undermine its independence of action risks causing severe damage to Catalan culture as a whole and is strongly to be discouraged.
